Technical Fouls & Disqualifications

CYO Technical Rule Policy

There are two types of technical fouls that can be given- a Book Technical and an Unsportsmanship Technical.

  • Book Technical: an entry of an incorrect number in the scorebook, excessive time outs, etc. are “book” technical.

  • Although we are concerned with all technicals, we are most concerned with those deemed as      “Unsportsmanlike”.

The following situations will be subject to disciplinary action.  “Unsportsmanlike” behaviors include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Dunking the ball during warm ups or dead ball

  • Excessive swinging of arms or elbows

  • Fighting, throwing a punch, pushing, or tripping

  • Taunting or trash talking

  • Profane language

  • Arguing with a referee

      Making contact with an official

  • Refusal to follow a referee’s command

  • Refusal to leave the court after being disqualified

  • Changing uniform numbers

  • Arguing with the official scorekeeper or timer, CYO Staff, Event Staff

  • Slapping the backboard

  • Hanging from the rim

**Any physical altercations (ie fighting, punching, etc.) will not be tolerated and any player involved in such will be subject to immediate suspension for the season.**

Technical Fouls

  • Any coach or player that receives a technical foul for unsportsmanlike behavior will be subject to the technical foul guidelines below.

  • CYO Staff will let the CYO office know within 24 hours of any technical fouls.

  • Records of technical fouls will be kept at Catholic Charities.

  • If a team receives 5 technical fouls, the 5 technical fouls will be used by Catholic Charities to determine the team’s eligibility to play.

  • Also, after the third technical foul, the coach, contact person, and/or Priest will be notified via written/electronic format from Catholic Charities.

Technical foul rules remain the same in playoff games.

Player Receiving Technical Foul

  • First Technical

  • Player must sit the time of one quarter, following his technical foul.

  • The player may re-enter once the time has expired.

  • If the call is made in the fourth quarter of a game, the remainder of the time is carried over to the next game.

  • Player’s Second Technical in Season

  • Player sits for the time of two quarters.

  • At this time the coach must warn the player of possible suspension from League.

  • Player’s Third Technical in Season

  • PLAYER MUST BE IMMEDIATELY SUSPENDED FROM FURTHER PLAY AND MEET WITH THE COACH AND CATHOLIC CHARITIES TO FURTHER DETERMINE ELIGIBILIGTY.

Coach With Two Technical Fouls In The Same Game

  • Will be ejected from the game and subject to the League’s disqualification rules.

  • If a coach is ejected from a game and there is no other coach to coach the team, that team will forfeit the game.

Team Technical

  • Once a team has reached its 3rd technical foul, the coach will receive notification from Catholic Charities; it will be at the discretion of Catholic Charities as to whether to meet with the coach to discuss the situation.

  • Once a team reaches 5 Un-sportsmanlike technical fouls, the team will not be able to continue to play until a review is made by Catholic Charities.

  • CYO review documentation of technical fouls to determine the team’s eligibility to play.

Disqualifications

Players or coaches who have been disqualified from a contest for unsportsmanlike conduct will serve the following penalties:

  • 1st Ejection- Player or coach is suspended from the next regularly scheduled contest.

  • 2nd Ejection- Player or coach is suspended from the next two (2) regularly scheduled contests.

  • 3rd Ejection- Player or coach is suspended for the remainder of the season.

The penalty for any ejection(s) from any contest that occurs in the last game or games of a season will carry over to the next season in which the ejected athlete or coach participates.  ALL disqualifications must be reported to the CYO office by the coach and the opposing coach by the next day.
